Rural Matters.

The RP Group's latest research highlights the importance of distance on the transfer outcomes of California community college students.

  • Community colleges closer to public California universities had higher transfer rates. In fact, colleges within 25 miles had higher transfer rates, and colleges more than 80 miles away had lower transfer rates.
  • University desert colleges-- colleges located in areas where there are limited four-year universities to which students can transfer-- serve more Latine, low-income, and first-generation students than non-desert colleges.
  • These findings underscore the urgent need to address the influence of distance on educational opportunities.
  • Policymakers and education leaders need to focus on providing equal opportunities for community college students statewide to pursue a bachelor's degree, regardless of where they live.
