Cabrillo Student Equity Convening and Focus Groups

As part of its equity planning efforts, Cabrillo College wanted to learn more about the experiences of students from the different groups that are being targeted in the college's Equity Plan. To do so, the college engaged the RP Group to conduct focus groups with the following student groups: Latino/a, African-American, and Native American students; current and former foster youth; veterans; and, students in need of accessibility/disability services. By investigating the experiences of students representing these populations, Cabrillo faculty, administration, and staff learned how students from these different groups uniquely experience Cabrillo College and identified areas for improvement in order to begin to address achievement gaps. Findings from the focus groups complemented the quantitative data gathered by Cabrillo in order to help inform the college's equity efforts.
